Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is the UK’s leading heart and lung hospital, treating around 50,000 patients each year. The hospital is a world-leading cardiothoracic transplant center and the biggest in the UK, having carried out more heart and lung transplants in 2019/20 than any other hospital. It is also home to the UK’s biggest sleep center, and is one of five hospitals commissioned by NHS England to provide Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) to adults with severe respiratory failure.

Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital carries out nearly one million outpatient appointments, day case procedures, and inpatient admissions annually. It is one of the largest inpatient Hospitals in the UK. They provide complex spinal surgery services, specialist Neonatal Intensive Care, neurosciences services,  specialist cardiac services, and more. They run more than 60 specialist services as a tertiary centre, including more than a dozen specialist cancer and radiotherapy treatments, and are one of the biggest cancer centres in the country.

Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust

Formally established in 2021, the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust is now one of the largest NHS providers in the country. They bring together staff and services from Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. Patients and service users receive a range of integrated health and social care services at their homes or in their community, they are committed to enhancing the health of local communities. The Northen Healthcare Alliance manages four large hospitals in the Greater Manchester area– Salford Royal Hospital, The Royal Oldham Hospital, Rochdale Infirmary, and Fairfield General Hospital in Bury.

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust provides acute and specialist healthcare for over one million people every year. They serve local communities in the eight boroughs that form the North West London Integrated Care System. Formed in 2007, they are one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, with more than 15,000 staff. In 2019/20 Imperial College Healthcare treated about 1.3 million patients.

University Hospitals, Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust is the merged Trust comprising University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and Weston Area Health NHS Trust. They provide various services across multiple hospital sites including maternity, haematology and oncology, children and young people, intensive care, and cancer services. It also hosts the only paediatric major trauma centre in the South-West.

University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge works closely with Addenbrookes Hospital, which provides acute neurosurgical services for all of East Anglia. They support large numbers of clinical staff within the hospital, many of whom perform life-saving neurological procedures every day. They are heavily involved in research around Traumatic Brain Injury, Neurodegenerative diseases, brain tumours and Neurodivergence.

University of East Anglia

The University of East Anglia conducts a lot of research around Neurodegenerative disease, looking in particular at those towards the end of life. Much of their research, done in collaboration with NNUH, looks into restorative measures to aid people at the end of life. The MoveExLab facility enables these studies to be conducted and data collected to improve treatment provided fro those suffering from Brain Injury.

University of Essex

The University of Essex has a multi-departmental approach to research on Brain Injury. Through a variety of departments, the university looks at a wide range of brain injuries (from sports concussions to dementia) and supports rehabilitation research to improve life after injury. They are particularly interested in prevention and increased awareness, as well as improving acute care and recovery innovations.

University of the West of England, Bristol

The University of the West of England, Bristol has made groundbreaking discoveries around the importance of early intervention with acquired brain injury, such as Alzheimer’s, and in emergency departments, with a particular focus on paediatric head injuries. They look more broadly at the range of symptoms associated with brain injury in different social and ethnic backgrounds and seek to improve understanding in these areas.
